5 good movement activities
Physical Education with Mr. Pecor
Activity 1: 4 Corners Materials: Just music and an open space with 4 corners.
If the music is on the student(s) will be in the middle of the room. When they’re in the middle of the room they must be moving. They can be dancing, running in place, jumping jacks, etc. If the music stops then they must run to a corner. When the music goes back on they go back to the middle. The next time the music stops they must skip to a different corner. Music stops again then they gallop to a different corner. The 4th time they must stay on their toes. The 5th time then must stay on their heels. The 6th time they have to frog jump to a corner. The 7th time they have to kangaroo jump to a corner. The 8th time they have to crab walk to a corner. The 9th time they have to slither to a corner. The 10th and last time they have to move backwards to a corner.
Activity 2: Hide and go seek Materials: Music and a timer
Everything is better with music!! When the music starts the student will go and hide. The person who is trying to find them must close their eyes and count to 30. When they get to 30 they will stop the music and start a timer. If you find them between 5 and 15 secs. Then they owe you 30 jumping jacks. If it takes between 15-25 secs then they owe you 20 jumping jacks. If it takes 25-40 secs then they owe you 10 jumping jacks. If you can’t find them after 40 secs then you owe them 15 jumping jacks. Then obviously you switch and you hide. LoL
Activity 3: Plastic bottle bowling Materials: plastic bottles and a ball. The ball could be a tennis ball, rubber ball, baseball or softball, a kickball, soccer ball. Etc..
Set up plastic bottles and create a bowling lane. Create a game where you challenge each other. Whoever knocks down the most bottles doesn’t owe a consequence. Consequences could include: Jumping jacks, Toe touches, 30 secs of dancing, 30 seconds of running in place, or high knees, or heel to bottom, 1 trip of moving around the entire house, etc..
Activity 4: Jumping rope, hula hoops (If you don’t have those then you could substitute a section of rope, or even longer shoe laces would work.
We just finished our jump roping and hula hooping unit. They love this and let them show off all of their tricks. For the kindergarteners even if they get one jump that's amazing. Praise, Praise, Praise that's the key here!! sheets of paper, cardboard, hats, gloves, socks, etc..
We did this activity back in the fall and the students love it. The goal is to get from one side of the room to the other only using one of the above materials. If it’s one person they can only have 3 poly spots. If it’s 2 people then they can have 4 etc.. You can pretend the floor is a raging river or hot lava. They can also pick up materials along the way for a more challenging experience. Once you talk about this activity the students will know exactly what this game is.
These activities will also be placed on my blog and if you have any questions please feel free to email me at paul.pecor@colchestersd.org. Thank you and please be safe.
